My Educational Philosophy
"If you are always curious, you will never be bored."
Welcome. That quote by Vincent Price has long been a guiding phrase for many aspects in my life. Curiosity, by definition, is an overwhelming desire to learn something new - something that, as it stands, is currently unknown. The unknown can be frightening, for there is comfort in the familiar. As educators, we preach to our students to push past the familiar, to excel beyond the constraints of their small hometown, to be the first member of their family to attend college, to travel abroad, to push themselves as hard as they can; that all with the mantra of “Get comfortable being uncomfortable,” for it is from that state of discomfort and risk that growth arises. We can spark that curiosity for the unknown, but students often hesitate to take those first steps without a gentle nudge and some guidance. That’s where teachers come in - to serve as that push onto that journey. But often, we, as educators, don’t get an opportunity to continue down our own path. Instead, we stop because we get wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of daily minutia, be it grading, ancillary duties, or dozens of other reasons. My goal is to help you push past that.
My core philosophy as an instructional coach is that teachers, just as their students, are lifelong learners. Educators who are truly passionate about their jobs strive to improve upon every lesson through both refinement and reflection. My goal is to assist with that inner drive. My role as a coach is not about telling you what the “right answer” is, any more than the role of a teacher (especially a science teacher) is about telling the students the “right answer.” It’s about our mutual inquiry and investigation into new activities or techniques to increase student engagement. It’s about us collaborating to better perfect a system that already works for you. It’s about my learning as much from you as you might from me. Simply put: it’s about my helping you grow towards (and reach) your own goals.
If you have such a desire to grow, contact me. And for further clarification on how I can help you reach your goals, please take a look at my coaching options.
